Nutritional Alternatives to a Food

Choose a food and see foods with a similar nutrient profile, with a similarity score, three notable similarities and the biggest difference. Nutritional similarity does not mean two foods suit the same diet or recipe.

How it works

  1. Choose a food (or arrive from a food page with it already chosen).
  2. See similar foods, or switch to complementary foods that fill the nutrient gaps of an amount of your food.
  3. Exclude food groups, allergens or diets and the list refreshes immediately; open a card for the detailed comparison.

What to keep in mind

  • Similarity compares nutrient content only; taste, texture, cooking use, allergens and diet are not assessed.
  • A low score is shown as a weak match.
  • Only nutrients measured the same way in both foods are compared.
  • Not medical advice.

Where the numbers come from

The same 892 foods and 34 nutrients as the food profiles and rankings, from USDA FoodData Central, UK CoFID and the Canadian Nutrient File, with the source record shown for every value. One calculation engine runs in your browser; nothing you enter is sent anywhere. About our data.

Search

Searches food names, source synonyms and a short synonym list (e.g. beet / beetroot).

Dried foods and spices

Dried foods, powders and spices are measured in a concentrated form, so a spoonful of dried herbs can outrank a whole portion of fresh food per 100 g. To keep the default ranking comparable they are hidden. They are still in the data: switch on “Dried” to include them, or search for one by name.
